Classic German Action Penny Toy Whistles By Distler, Levy and more...

Johann Distler founded his toy company in 1900 , Nuremberg Germany, the company closed at 1962 .
Famous for its tin toys . His action penny toy whistles are all very scarce and rare, they have wonderful colours.
His trademark were; J.D. with a thistle. later the letters J.D. and later a globe with J.D.N.
Prior to WWI he concentrated on small tin penny-toys and later on larger ones.

Here are a few classic action penny toys made by distler mostly between 1912 to 1929 the whistles are all reed whistles , they have a brass reed as in a harmonica.
Some of these show in the 'Universal toy catalogue' of 1924 / 26. Pic #1, # 4 , # 5)
The first three have a turning wheel action.

I shall discuss many more action tin penny toy whistles, none action tin Penny-toys and cast penny toys in the near future and classify some, it had been a work in progress for years now but needs more time.

In general Penny toys and action Penny toys were made since 1860's or earlier, the earliest documented one I had seen is an American patent 1868, by some fellow in connecticut, (hopefully I wrote down the inventor's name somewhere and number, will check) using the same idea with Horse race carousell, a Penny toy whistle that was made with many variations.
The whistle is presented at the Paris Disney land on the right hand side
along with other american patents in some large glass cabinets.
from tin, cast metals, paper & wood, and can all be with action , part that move when one blows the whistle, and static ones.
The toys are devided and may use 4 types of whistles,

* Metal reed whistle as used in a Harmonica or Pitch-pipe.
* Paper Bellow whistle
* Regular whistle.
* Squeaking whistle, chirping, operated by friction. (less common)

The next ones are German made but I could not associate with a certain maker, may be a toy expert may be of help with these.

The Rooster or Peacock is an earlier one, propably asround 1905 to 1910,  in general the pattern that has a bulky mouthpiece as this one were used earlier,
Porcelaine mouthpieces were also used on earlier lithographed tin noise
makers and in the early 1920's changed to white hard plastic.

The next is  a black Americana figure playing Saxsophone, drum and cymbal, a tripple action, tricky one with a thread coming out the buttom
(Not seen here) whick makes the other habd bit the drum while the other hits the Hi-Hat cymbal.
It has a short reed pipe and it is markes D.R.G.M.
standing for Deutsches Reichs-Gebraucchs Muster.signifiying a second grade patent valid for three years or sometimes six years.
1920's

The next one ; Sailor with paper bellow whistle is marked GeLy on his hat, so this is by Georg Levy.
George Levy made tin toys in Nuremberg . First working for other makers, then on his own fro 1916, he started his company in 1921 but sold his company in 1934 when he emmigrated to England, the company made toys up to 1971.
Stamp says made in Germany and also M # 97.
Early 1920's.

Very Rare.
