O'reilly's Police whistle Patent # 1,094,006/1914, American whistles, Two different size windows . A.Strauss. ( At work)Whistle Manufacturers History and Samples by A.Strauss
I bring here photos of most of the original patent for the benefit of those interested in learning about the evolution of police whistles construction and patents .
Trying to map the manufacturers of American police whistles between 1890's to 1930
a subject little researched and an anigma to be deciphered.
I added a picture of whistle actually made to this patent , and will add more,
You may also want to check a previous article about O'reilly's court suit against another whistle manufacturer Benjamin Harris Co. Inc. of New York in 1918.
O'reilly's patent has 3 main unique features ;
* Uneven windows
* Even chambers
* Diaphragm '13'.
* (The disk element mentioned in patent would be discussed later
The author first discovered that there are GSW's with two size windows .
It was previously unnoticed, since then there were more whistles found to have this unique feature.
It is no wonder it went unnoticed before since rarely one holds a whistle and compares and a single picture of a whistle can not show the two windows of a tubular whistle. (See 2 more samples at the next entry winchester model # 1807 condundrum).
Some of these two different size windows do have two even chambers and some do not .
The lenght of chambers can be measured and compared by inserting a bent metal wire
into the windows until it reaches the cap from the inside alng the partition.
The Patent Drawing

* The loop in the drawing may not nesacerily is the on actually used on all models,
as it is the case in many other patent's drawing.
Actual whistle

The Chief whistle with O'reily's patent date stamp.
UNIQUE FEATURES
1. * The whistle actually has two different size windows and it is the only patent known to have two different window sizes.
( a similar feature was found in H.A Ward whistles and discussed in another entry)
2.* Both chambers are of same lenght, no stop blank.
3.* The Diaphragm, see number 13 in the drawings;
has two tines 'Ears' see paragraph 45 in patent describtion.
These are two wide tines that actualy are as wide as the distance between the windows.
it reminds of patent 435 by J.Hudson & Co. of 1885, but these tine are wide and go down all the way to the mouth-piece .
For reference I call it diaphragm '13'.
Note; * This whistle is missing the loop which was made of round folded heavy wire.
by the small round hole where it was inserted. other loops when missing leave a larger rectangular shape hole. hopefully soon a complete one would be found by some collector to verify.
* More U.S. whistles were found to have one or more of the 3 O'reilly's patent unique features
Uneven windows
Even chambers
Diaphragm '13'.
Some more samples are to be discussed soon , hopefully some collectors would check and discover
some more. ( Updates are welcome...)

Found a whistle that says "The Chief" and "Pat. Applied For" that looks like one pictured as 1,094,006 O'Reiley
It has a loop. Is there somewhere I can send a picture?
