Compass Whistles Seven Types & Subgroups. A. Strauss (2)
Following the 1rst chapter I recieved today many pictures of compass whistle combination from a portugese visitor ,
I bring these as recieved, I classified according to my system see same title (1)
and will add notes attempting to identify the ones I can.
Further input and pictures from collectors is welcome.

Type 1 A, London style compass escargots ;
left unidentified , curved lower beak ,
the understrengthening is typical to chinese and japanese ones,
it would need a closer look , my guess is late 40s Japan U.S Zone to early 1950's japan made by a firm that later used KK in diamond logo in very simmilar but cheaper models, and hump back top loop.
Right; a 1957 Japanese tin whistle (Could be cross referenced as type 7 A as well),
it is one with embossed dove carrying an olive branch, part of a series with embossed figures, with and without compass, there are over 6 different figures in the series,
the dove version is the more frequently met with.
The pea is cilynderical cork. and the tin has a copper color.
If I remember right it was manufactured by Marunaka, and still made at the early 1970's.( will recheck).
Left; German made 1900's to 1930's distinct shiny pospherous color I believe it has starsd on the inner circle, hard to find,
made by Martin's signal the "Mephisto" or "Champion" are two models stamped on a domed barrel side.
A bit simmilar french version with hump back loop exists, but with a black and white compass scale and a circle pattern embossed on the other side, popular since late 1890's with german makers and with Walton & De Courcy there after.
Very well made. Nickel plated brass.
Note; Ib had never seen this german whistles with the compass on the left side.
Middle; A silver plated cast french made whistle that has side understenghening to the beak and could almost pass as a Glasgow style distinct features are the wind rose on the compass scale ! and the tooth grip, comes in two sizes this is the smaller ussually with a drilled wood pea.
Note; Cast french whistles traditionally have the compass on the left side.
Right; seems to be German 1920s 30s by Calura nickel silver palted heavy tin.
All three are stamped The Acme Thunderer, identified with Hudson & Co. Post 1924 to late 30s. Hudson made these in 3 sizes but with variations
All three are hard to find scarce or rare, left is Model # 060 1/2 C. large one Model# 058 1/2 C. and there is the mis size Model 059 1/2 C. Hudson also made Modle# o66c small size with tappered mouthpiece. all the models seen here with hump back were made with a bubble top as well and drawings of all 4 with the bubble top model appear
Note the 3 different compasses used and the wind roses.
Hudson used german made compasses on their whistles.
Type 2 A.
J Hudson and Company The EMCA boy scouts (EMCA was the reverse of ACME Cheaper models). 1930's. made until mid 1940's.
The Emca boy scot 1930s, came in 5 sizes. the loop is a flat loop with straight angles,
not rounded at the edges.
Left; seems to be Hudson , mouth piece is a variation I am not sure about.
right; Hudson's The Emca stamp above window comes in 5 sizes, model 523 1/2,
524 1/2 etc.
Type 2 A , German made by Van Der Crone 1920's 30's, Note the round "wire like " top loop ,
two piece top, distinct to many german made whistles.
Type 2 B by J. Hudson & Co.
left; Oxydised brass, J Hudson & Co., THe Emca Boy scout 1930's.
right ; J.Hudson & Co. The Acme boy scout, Model # 523 Reg. No. 705987 , 1924 -1938 .
Type 3 B
Left; J. Hudson & Co. pillar top, Model # 418 later 1920's 1930s,
stamped made in england, earlier models do not, some have a Bubble top.
Middle J. Hudson pillar top, model # 418, 1930's Reg. no. 494339.
Right; Propably De Courcy by the distinct loop, as much as I can see. rare.
Type 4 ; Two nice round whistles by BADUEL, french maker.
High quality whistles discussed before in two entries.
I believe one may be 57 mm and one 61 mm.
Update recieved left is 58mm, right 59mm.

I have a 1940 the acme thunderer whistle produce by J.Hudson & co Birmingham.Iwould like to know what`s it worth.
